Located in the heart of Darwen this leisure centre has an impressive 25 metre eight lane swimming pool, a teaching pool, a main gym with 80 pieces of equipment, a multi-purpose fitness studio with a wide range of fitness classes, a multi-use sports hall and activity rooms that are available for a range of courses and room hire.
Please note that the pools will be closed at the following times due to private bookings:
- Saturday 26 January 2019, 12.30 – 4.30pm – Main and Boom Pool
- Sunday 24 February 2019, 9.30am – 12.30pm – Main and Boom Pool
Due to Health and Safety guidelines the council’s swimming pools must adhere to strict bather numbers. As a result, at busy sessions all customers will be asked at reception to choose between the Large Pool and Small Pool and unfortunately access to both pools during the session will not be permitted. This allows us to safely manage numbers in each pool area to ensure everyone experiences a safe, enjoyable service. We apologise if this may cause any inconvenience.
Whilst every effort is taken to ensure that our timetables are kept up to date we do recommend that you contact the leisure centre on the day of your visit for any changes to the programming.

Swimming Pool Admission Policy For Children
Under 8’s policy – Children under 8 years must be accompanied by an adult in the water. An adult is a responsible person over 16 years. The only exception to this is organised lessons and classes.
Children are the responsibility of the accompanying adult and they must always be in sight and never left alone.
Only two children under 8 years may accompany one adult.
Under 4’s policy – Any child under 4 must be accompanied by a swimmer aged 16 or over on a one to one basis, who must closely accompany that child in the water at all times.
Whenever possible, parents with non swimmers and young children under the age of 5 years must be encouraged to use the small pool when available. If not available, armbands or suitable buoyancy aids must be worn and non swimmers restricted to the shallow part of the pool. If the small pool is not available for use the lifeguard must inform the Duty Officer if the bather load increases the risk to young children.
Children under 8 years must not be left alone on poolside or on the spectator galleries. This includes babies and young children in prams etc. The lifeguards cannot supervise these children.

Changing Room and Locker Information
The changing room is in a family/communal style – there are no separate male and female areas. This gives flexibility, as it allows parents with children of a different gender, easy changing. There are group changing rooms for schools, which can be sectioned off from the rest of the changing area.
There are large family changing cubicles and all other cubicles are much larger than normal so that each one can fit one adult and one child. There are several baby changing units. There are individual enclosed showers and general shower areas.
All lockers in the centre operate by using £1 coins which are returnable. Keys for the lockers are on a wrist band which you can take with you when you swim. Re-usable locker tokens can be purchased at reception for £1 each.
Darwen Leisure Centre has two assisted changing rooms with a hoist, one in the pool level changing rooms and the other on the first floor.
There are two changing rooms next to the main ground floor dry changing rooms which ensure that a carer of a different gender can help, there are also large lockers for bulky equipment.
A pool hoist and easy access steps are available for both large and small pools.
There are six disabled parking bays just outside the main entrance with level access.
Lift access is available to all floors and pool chairs are available if you need to transfer from your own wheelchair to one suitable for poolside (please ask at reception upon entry), wheelchairs can be left on the pool level at the bottom of the main stairs.
